Nearly every drive features unexpected moments. For that reason it is important that when you're choosing a vehicle, you choose a vehicle with superior handling, traction and control. When an independent test was conducted to see how the top five all-wheel drive crossovers would handle unpredictable situations, see how the Subaru Forester ranked against the competition of Honda, Ford, Toyota and Mazda.
The test was implemented on a closed course by members of the United States Auto Club, who measured the time required to negotiate obstacles on a dry surface. The test was conducted on all-wheel drive crossovers including: Subaru Forester, Honda CR-V, Ford Escape, Toyota RAV4 and Mazda CX-5.
As each test driver took a series of runs through the closed course, speed was increased through each run to determine which vehicle could complete the course with the fastest time - without hitting any obstacles.
Drivers found that other vehicles over- and under-steered, causing the vehicle to make contact with varies obstacles throughout the course. While navigating the course, drivers found the Toyota RAV4 was under-steering around corners and they did not feel traction control kicking in. When the Mazda CX-5 was tested, it made contact with barriers when the back end swung out - which is called an over-steer. The front wheels of the Ford Escape were reported to kick in, almost feeling as if the front wheels were coming up off the ground. The Honda CRV also made contact with barriers as drivers navigated through the course.
