The compact crossover is one of the most sought-after models in our area because it combines the feel & driving experience of a sedan with the versatility & power normally seen in a SUV. Two of the more popular models here in North Jersey are the 2015 Subaru Forester and 2015 Honda CR-V.
Honda CR-V vs. Subaru Forester
These vehicles have a similar size, the exact same towing capacity (up to 1,500 lbs) to bring extras along for the ride and very close miles per gas tank (combined mpg x fuel tank capacity) numbers with AWD. However, there are a few reasons why the Forester is a superior compact SUV choice than the CR-V.
All-Wheel Drive (AWD) Availability
The biggest performance-enhancing technology offered for any SUV is AWD. Subaru's Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive comes standard in the Forester, unlike the Honda CR-V's Real Time AWD that's only offered as an upgrade.
Why pay extra with the Honda when you don't have to if you opt for the Subaru?
More Spacious Interior
When choosing an SUV, you'll want the most space possible. The 2015 Subaru Forester offers 74.7 cubic feet of cargo space when the rear seats are folded down, which is more than the 2015 Honda CR-V.
That means you can pack more for an upcoming road trip (perhaps for the holidays?). The Forester also provides more front & rear headroom, which the tall people in your life will love.
Safety
Another reason to consider a compact SUV is for the safety you can get. Let's start with crash testing: the IIHS named the Subaru Forester a Top Safety Pick+ due to its performance in small & overlap frontal, side, rear and rollover collisions.
As of this post's publishing, the CR-V hasn't been named an IIHS Top Safety Pick since 2013.
Feature Lineup
Both of these SUVs are packed with features including a rear vision camera that comes standard, but there are some that only come in the Forester.
The most prominent one is Subaru EyeSight driver assist technology, which gives you adaptive cruise control, lane departure & sway warning and pre-collision braking & throttle management. Only some of these capabilities are offered for the CR-V.
