IIHS Top Safety Pick Award
The IIHS test evaluates two aspects of safety, a vehicles crashworthiness or how well it protects its occupants in a crash and its crash avoidance and mitigation, technology that can prevent or lessen the severity of a crash.
There are two IIHS Awards given, the 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick and 2014 IIHS Top Safety Pick+. To qualify for the 2014 Top Safety Pick the vehicle must earn Good ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests as well as good or acceptable n the small overlap test.
To qualify for the 2014 Top Safety Pick+ a vehicle must meet the Top Safety Pick criteria and also earn a basic, advanced or superior rating for front crash prevention.
In order to determine crashworthiness, the IIHS rates vehicles in the order of Good being the best, Acceptable, Marginal or poor based on their performance in five road tests which include moderate overlap front, small overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraints.
In the category of crash prevention systems rating of basic advanced or superior, based on the type of system and performance in track tests.
